Govt. to
close down all substandard universities--Prof. Dr. Attaur
Rahman Hamdard University's 8th convocation held
The minister in charge of
Science and Technology and chairman, Higher Educatio
Commission Prof Dr Attaur Rahman, has reiterated that the
government would not observe any leniency regarding the
private institutions operating illegally or imparting
substandard higher education.

Educational institutions,
including those already granted charters, were required to
comply with the federal cabinet's guidelines on higher
education institutions within a time frame already given
to them, otherwise they would be closed down or
downgraded. Dr Atta stated this, while speaking as chief
guest at the eighth convocation of the Hamdard University
on Saturday 14th February 2004.

As many as 1,204 degrees and
diplomas, including 444 given in person, were conferred in
different disciplines during the convocation held at the
Madinat al-Hikmah-campus of Hamdard University. The
recipient graduates including six Ph.D. students were
presented before the chief guest for award of degrees

In his convocation address,
speaking to the senior educationists, lawyers, doctors,
government officials, other dignitaries and parents of the
graduates, Dr Atta said that the Higher Education
Commission was concerned about the reports regarding
substandard institutions. While he personally felt that
there was no room for institutions, which fared badly and
failed to come up to the expectation of the society, badly
needing transformation.
He said that the HEC would publish the ratings of the
higher education institutions, both in the private as well
as public sector, every year, for organizations and
individuals. Students and their parents should know about
the standard of education and facilities at a particular
institute, to guide them for admissions, he pointed out.
